Gems and Socketed Items
- Socketed items – or, more precisely, socketable items – have their names appear in gray when highlighted.
- Only Weapons, Shields and Helms have socketed versions, excepting Throwing Weapons and Necromancer Wands, which cannot be socketed.
- The maximum number of Sockets is 3, with each weapon type always having the same number of sockets – a socketed Dagger will always have 1 socket.
- The gold value of a Socketed item is the same as a normal version of the item, a High Quality item will be worth more than a Socketed one of the same type.
- Socketed items allow you to customise your equipment by giving them specific magical properties when you fuse them with gems.
- While in your inventory, you may insert a gem into a Socketed item by picking the gem up and dropping it on the Socketed item.
- Once the gem is fused into the weapon or armour, it can no longer be removed from the item.
- There are five grades of gems: chipped, flawed, normal, flawless and perfect. Higher grades of gems will produce more powerful effects.
- You can upgrade your gems by using the Horadric Cube or by using a Gem Shrine.
- Tranmuting 3 gems of the same type and grade in the Cube will give you 1 gem of the same type one grade higher – 3 chipped skulls = 1 flawed skull.
- Touching a Gem Shrine will upgrade a random gem from your inventory or produce a random chipped gem if you are not carrying a gem.
- Vendors do not sell gems, but if another player in a multiplayer game sells a gem to a vendor you may be able to buy it.
- The bonuses given by gems are cumulative, placing three gems of the same type into an item will convey the bonuses of all three.
- Emeralds & Weapons : Both the poison length and the damage is added up, effectively quadrupling the damage when you socket two emeralds.
- The first gem placed into an item will determine the colour of the item.
- The attack display is random if there is more than one attack type, though all of them are working concurrently – a sword socketed with an Emerald and a Sapphire may show a chill effect with one hit and a poison effect with another, but the monster is being affected by both.
